There is one thing that really gets on my nerves about media. People design and build a beautiful website, create social media accounts to share their creative work, and then…they go for weeks or months without posting anything on these accounts! This is a serious problem for audience members who go looking for you.
I did the social media for an event this summer called Make Music Plymouth and was the event’s ruthless leader on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and their blog. From the constant posts I did for this event, some of the musicians started taking up my cause and have been consistently posting updates about their performances to their Facebook pages since then. This made me really excited, but also very disappointed with artists who have all these media outlets and just let them go dormant!
The most important rule of engaging your audience? Be consistent.
Let’s say I go to an open mic performance and see a comedian do a half hour routine. I’m drinking some awesome drink, eating some incredible nachos, and laughing like I’ve never laughed before! I wake up the next morning, still laughing about last night’s jokes, and I head over to my computer. I look up the name of the comedian online and find his Facebook page. I scroll down and see that his last post was December of 2013…Really?
As an audience member, my incentive to subscribe is to get bits of his work in my feed and updates for upcoming performances! “Liking” his abandoned page won’t provide any of these things: no funny shared videos, no commentary posts about society, and no performance updates so I can enjoy a new set. He’s left me hanging.
If you ever wanted a list of important media rules for yourself, number one is consistency! If you want your audience to interact with you, you need to interact with the platforms you create. Spread the word about them at your performances! If you aren’t getting the traffic you want, don’t pout! Continue to post daily or every other day at least!
